When the time came for me to decide what I wanted to do for my final year project at the University of Kent, I knew I wanted it to involve animation. However I did not want to create an animated story as I felt this did not use all the skills I had learnt throughout the course, such as actionscript coding. I was encouraged to base the project on something educational and constructive for the user, which gave me the idea to create an animated program aimed at primary school children to help them with maths problems; simply referred to as an ‘edu-tainment program’.
Throughout my reasearch into this idea, I found that simillar programs did exist, based around a simple multiple choice quiz for every maths subject. The downside to these games were that they had no storyline, and therefore no ultimate goal or sense of acheivement once completed. This was to be one of my aims for my project.
…And so, I started with initial sketches of ‘Bodmas’ Brain Buster’…
After many sleepless nights and much actionscript cursing, the project was complete. A few weeks later the results came in from the board. Not only were they impressed with my efforts, they deemed it worthy of entering into the Europrix awards.
I was awarded a 2007 Quality Seal for ‘Bodmas’ Brain Buster’, an acheivement I am very proud of, and I hope to enter more projects in the future…
